Bardia National Park is Nepal's largest lowland wilderness — 968 sq km of Terai forest, grassland and river floodplain in the far west of the country. While Chitwan draws bigger crowds, Bardia offers something increasingly rare: genuine wilderness with sightings of Royal Bengal Tigers, wild Asian elephants, Gangetic river dolphins and the endangered swamp deer (barasingha), often without another tourist vehicle in sight.
This 6-day tour connects three of Nepal's most significant destinations: the UNESCO World Heritage temples of Kathmandu Valley on Day 1, the Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini — birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha — on Days 2–3, and two full days of jungle safari in Bardia on Days 4–5 before flying back to Kathmandu.
Why choose Bardia? Tiger density and solitude. Your jungle guide will track pugmarks along the Babai River floodplain and wait at waterholes at dawn — the hour tigers move most freely. Elephant herds of up to 30 individuals cross the park's grasslands during the dry season. Gangetic river dolphins — critically endangered globally — are spotted regularly in the Karnali and Babai rivers.
Lumbini is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in the world. The Maya Devi Temple marks the precise birthplace of the Buddha, and the Ashoka Pillar from 249 BCE confirms the site's authenticity. Bardia generally offers higher tiger encounter rates per visitor due to significantly lower tourism volume. Chitwan wins on ease of access from Kathmandu (5-hour drive vs. flight to Nepalgunj). Bardia wins on solitude and wider wilderness experience.
The most practical route is a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (approximately 1 hour), followed by a 1.5-hour drive to Thakurdwara. This package includes the return Nepalgunj–Kathmandu flight.
One-horned rhinoceros, spotted deer, barking deer, langur monkeys and gharial crocodile are commonly sighted. Wild Asian elephants in herds are a Bardia speciality. Gangetic river dolphins are seen on river safaris. Royal Bengal Tigers are sighted on many multi-day safari visits.

October to April is optimal. The park closes during the monsoon (typically mid-June to mid-August) due to flooding. November to February offers the clearest skies and best wildlife tracking conditions.
