Over 75 percent of Nepal's population lives in villages, dependent on agriculture, farming and animal husbandry - yet most visitors to Nepal never see this world, moving instead between Kathmandu, Pokhara and the major trekking routes. The Experience Rural Nepal tour is built around the opposite premise: that the small villages around Nagarkot, Dhulikhel and Charikot offer a more honest picture of Nepali life and culture than any heritage site, however beautiful.
This 14-day itinerary moves through three distinct phases. The first phase (days 2-5) is gentle village walking around Nagarkot and Dhulikhel - terraced farmland, stone farmhouses, community life, with Himalayan views as a backdrop rather than the main event. The second phase (days 6-9) is a moderate trek from Charikot to Kalinchowk Temple at 3,700m, a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists set in high alpine terrain. The third phase (days 10-11) is a complete change of pace at The Last Resort on the Bhote Koshi River, known for its adventure activities (bungee, canyon swing, white water rafting) in a dramatic gorge setting. The trip closes with Kathmandu Valley cultural sightseeing before departure.
Like all our itineraries, this is a sample framework - every detail can be adjusted to your interests, available time and fitness level. If village life is your priority, the Kalinchowk trekking section can be reduced or removed. If you want more trekking, it can be extended. See our Bandipur village guide for another excellent rural Nepal destination, our community-centered travel guide for the broader context of responsible rural tourism in Nepal, and our tailor-made holidays page for the full custom design process.
All of our holidays are completely tailor-made and prices will vary based on things like when in the year you will be travelling (High season, Low season), how far in advance you book, the number of people travelling in your group, the level of accommodation you choose etc. Please click on the next tab (INQUIRY/ BOOKING) and send us your inquiry. We will reply you with cost and other necessary details within 24 hours.
This 14-day tour deliberately avoids the standard tourist circuit. Rather than moving between major cities, it spends most of its time in small villages around Nagarkot, Dhulikhel and Charikot - communities where over 75 percent of Nepal's population still lives, dependent on agriculture and farming. The itinerary combines village walks, a moderate trek to Kalinchowk Temple at 3,700m, and adventure relaxation at The Last Resort, bookended by Kathmandu Valley cultural sightseeing.
Moderate fitness is recommended. Most days involve village walking on varied terrain. The Charikot to Kalinchowk Temple section (days 7-9) is the most demanding part of the trip, reaching 3,700m with daily walks of approximately 6 hours. This is achievable for anyone with regular walking fitness and no serious health conditions, but is more strenuous than the village exploration days around Nagarkot and Dhulikhel.
The Last Resort is an adventure resort on the Bhote Koshi River near the Nepal-Tibet border, known for its high bungee jump, canyon swing and canyoning activities, white water rafting and a suspension bridge crossing. After the Kalinchowk trek, it provides two days of relaxation and optional adventure activities in a dramatic riverside gorge setting - a deliberate contrast to the village and trekking days.
Yes - this itinerary is a sample framework and every detail can be adjusted: duration can be shortened or extended, the Kalinchowk trekking section can be made easier or removed for those preferring village time only, The Last Resort can be swapped for other activities, and additional villages or regions can be added. See our tailor-made holidays page for the full custom design process.
The price includes all accommodation with breakfast throughout, airport transfers, all transport between stated destinations in Nepal, sightseeing with an English-speaking guide, and entry fees to Kathmandu temples and tourist sites. Not included: Nepal visa fee, international airfare, alcoholic beverages, personal expenses and tips for guide and driver. Send an inquiry via the booking tab above for an itemized quote based on your dates and group size.
