Chitwan National Park (UNESCO) is exceptional: one of Asia's highest densities of rhinoceros and tiger with reliable sighting frequencies and professional jeep safari access. Early morning safari sessions provide the best natural light. Bardia National Park in the far west offers tigers in a remote, undisturbed setting with lower visitor numbers for more naturalistic photography. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is outstanding for migratory waterbird photography. Nepal's tiger population tripled 2009-2022, making wildlife sightings increasingly reliable.
Wildlife safari: telephoto 400-600mm for Chitwan and Bardia. Landscape/mountain: wide-angle 16-35mm for Himalayan panoramas; sturdy tripod essential for dawn mountain shots and low-light temple interiors. Street photography: 35mm or 50mm prime is least intrusive in Kathmandu markets. Dust-proof bags recommended for city work. Altitude above 3,000m reduces battery performance - carry two full sets. Memory cards: shoot in RAW, bring adequate capacity. A lightweight backup body is worth considering for long trekking photography routes.
October to November: best mountain clarity, active wildlife, and the Dashain and Tihar festival season for extraordinary cultural photography. March to May: rhododendron bloom landscape photography, spring festivals (Holi, Bisket Jatra in Bhaktapur), good mountain visibility. December to February: exceptional mountain clarity and light for Himalayan landscape work, fewer tourists at each location. Monsoon (June to September): dramatic cloud and light effects but reduced mountain visibility - good for monsoon landscape photography if that is your specialization.
Standard entry tickets cover personal photography at Kathmandu Valley UNESCO sites (Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Bhaktapur, Patan). Commercial photography permits are site-specific and separate - we arrange these for all photography tour clients. The interior sanctum of Pashupatinath is restricted to Hindus. Tripod photography requires advance permission at several sites. We handle all permit logistics as part of the photography tour planning service. For high-altitude trekking photography routes, standard trekking permits apply.
