Kathmandu Valley - Nepal's Cultural and Spiritual Heartland

Kathmandu Valley - 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and 130+ Monuments

The Kathmandu Valley is Nepal's cultural and historical heartland. Within a radius of 30km, this compact bowl of hills and settlements contains 7 UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Sites, more than 130 significant historical monuments, and the living traditions of the Newari civilization that produced one of South Asia's most distinctive architectural and artistic cultures. Kathmandu, Patan (Lalitpur) and Bhaktapur are the three medieval royal cities of the valley, each with its own Durbar Square (royal palace complex), dozens of pagoda temples, and functioning residential quarters where traditional Newari life continues in buildings that are centuries old.

The 7 UNESCO monument zones are: Kathmandu Durbar Square (Hanuman Dhoka) with the living Kumari Devi (child goddess) and the ancient palace complex; Patan Durbar Square with the finest collection of Newari stone and metal sculpture in Nepal and the outstanding Patan Museum; Bhaktapur Durbar Square with the 55-Window Palace, Nyatapola Temple (Nepal's tallest pagoda at 30m) and the best-preserved medieval city fabric; Pashupatinath Temple, Nepal's holiest Hindu shrine on the Bagmati River with the sacred cremation ghats; Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world and the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal; Swayambhunath, the 2,500-year-old hilltop Buddhist complex known as the Monkey Temple; and Changu Narayan, the oldest temple in the valley (4th century CE). A focused 2-day itinerary can visit all 7. Refer to our detailed UNESCO heritage sites guide for entry fees, opening hours and planning details.

Beyond the 7 UNESCO zones, the Kathmandu Valley rewards deeper exploration. The old city neighborhoods of Thamel (tourism hub), Asan (traditional market), and Patan's residential streets offer immersion in living urban culture. Day trips extend naturally to Bhaktapur (30 minutes), Nagarkot for Himalayan sunrise (1.5 hours), Dhulikhel and the Namobuddha hike (1 hour), and Bandipur on the road to Pokhara (3.5 hours). The valley is also the starting point for adventure activities including Everest mountain flights departing daily from Tribhuvan Airport, white water rafting on the Trishuli River, and extreme sports at The Last Resort.

The 7 UNESCO Heritage Sites - Key Information

Kathmandu Durbar Square (Hanuman Dhoka): The historic royal palace complex of the Shah dynasty in central Kathmandu. Key sights include the Kumari Ghar (residence of the living child goddess), the Great Courtyard (Nasal Chowk), the Taleju Temple and dozens of smaller shrines. The earthquake of 2015 damaged several structures including the Kasthamandap (from which Kathmandu takes its name); restoration is ongoing. Entry NPR 1,000. Located in the Basantapur area, 15 minutes' walk from Thamel.

Patan Durbar Square: Across the Bagmati River from Kathmandu in Lalitpur, Patan's Durbar Square is considered the finest of the three royal squares. The Krishna Mandir temple (1636), built entirely in stone in the shikhara style, the Bhimsen Temple and the Royal Palace containing the Patan Museum (Nepal's best museum for Newari art and metalwork) make this a full half-day. Entry NPR 1,000.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square: The most completely preserved of the three royal cities, 13km east of Kathmandu. The 55-Window Palace, Golden Gate (finest repousse metalwork in Nepal), Nyatapola Temple, Pottery Square and the Peacock Window in nearby Dattatreya Square require at least one full day. Entry NPR 1,800 for the whole old city. See our full Bhaktapur travel guide.

Pashupatinath Temple: The most sacred Hindu temple in Nepal, 5km east of Thamel on the Bagmati River. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple but the eastern riverside ghats provide an unobstructed view of the temple architecture and the sacred cremation site. The surrounding hillside shelters hundreds of resident sadhus. Best visited early morning or late afternoon. Entry NPR 1,000 for the riverside area.

Boudhanath Stupa: 7km from central Kathmandu, Boudhanath (Boudha) is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world at 36m tall and 100m in diameter. The surrounding precinct contains 47 active Tibetan monasteries and is the spiritual center of Nepal's Tibetan Buddhist community. Circumambulation (kora) at dawn or dusk with monks and pilgrims is one of Kathmandu's most atmospheric experiences. Entry NPR 400.

Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple): A 2,500-year-old Buddhist complex on a forested hilltop 3km west of Thamel, reached by 365 stone steps or a vehicle road. The main stupa, multiple shrines and vajra sculptures command panoramic views over the Kathmandu Valley. The site's resident rhesus macaques give it the popular Monkey Temple name. Best light is at sunrise and sunset. Entry NPR 200.

Changu Narayan Temple: The oldest temple in the Kathmandu Valley (4th century CE), dedicated to Vishnu, on a forested ridge 12km north of Bhaktapur. The temple precinct contains some of the valley's finest stone carving. A walking trail from Nagarkot descends to Changu Narayan in 2-3 hours. Entry NPR 300.
