Top Things to Do in Pokhara

Sarangkot Sunrise: The hilltop viewpoint at 1,592m, 13km from Lakeside, is Pokhara's most iconic experience. At dawn on clear days, the Annapurna massif and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail, 6,993m) emerge from darkness in sequence, turning gold and white as the sun rises over the eastern hills. The panorama is among the finest accessible mountain views anywhere in Nepal. Sarangkot is reached by taxi (30 min from Lakeside) or a 2-hour hike. October to February gives the clearest views; March and April are also excellent.

Paragliding: Pokhara is one of Asia's premier paragliding destinations and Nepal's most popular. Tandem flights with certified pilots launch from Sarangkot and soar for 30-45 minutes over Phewa Lake with the Annapurna range filling the northern horizon. Thermal conditions are consistent throughout the day from October to May. Phewa Lake: Nepal's second-largest lake is the heart of Pokhara's lakeside area. Rowing and paddleboats are available for hire and are one of the most pleasant ways to spend a Pokhara morning. The Tal Barahi Temple (an island temple accessible by boat) is a short row from the main jetty. The lake reflects the Annapurna range when conditions are calm - early morning before wind develops gives the most perfect reflection photography. Lakeside restaurants with lake views are excellent for morning coffee and evening meals.

Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Trekking: Pokhara is the trekking gateway for the Annapurna region - the most popular trekking destination in Nepal. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek (5-7 days) is accessible directly from Pokhara and is Nepal's most popular short trek. The Annapurna Base Camp Trek (14 days) reaches the glacial sanctuary at 4,130m. International Mountain Museum: The finest mountaineering museum in Nepal (and one of the best in Asia), covering the history of Himalayan climbing with artifacts, photographs and exhibits on all fourteen 8,000m peaks. Located 5km south of Lakeside. Essential for anyone interested in the history of high-altitude mountaineering. Allow 2-3 hours.

Devi's Falls and Mahendra Cave: Devi's Falls (also called Patale Chhango) is a dramatic waterfall on the Phusre Khola river that disappears underground into a limestone cavity, 2km south of Lakeside. Mahendra Cave, 8km north, is an accessible limestone cave with stalactites and a small Buddha shrine. Both are easily combined in a morning or afternoon trip from Lakeside.

World Peace Pagoda: A large white Buddhist stupa on a forested hill above the southern shore of Phewa Lake, built by the Japanese Nipponzan Myohoji order. The hilltop position gives panoramic views over Pokhara and the lake. Accessible by boat across the lake and a 20-minute climb, or by road from the south. Best visited at sunset when the light on the Annapurna range is most dramatic.

Ultralight Aircraft and Skydiving: Ultralight aircraft flights from Pokhara airport give 20-30 minute aerial views over the lake and valley with the Himalayan range as backdrop.
