Nepal holds an extraordinary position in global wildlife travel. A country the size of England contains 8.9% of the world's recorded bird species (850+ species), 3.96% of all mammal species, and some of the most dramatic wildlife recovery stories of the last 50 years: the one-horned rhinoceros population in Chitwan National Park recovered from near-extinction (95 animals in the 1970s) to over 700 today; Nepal's national Bengal tiger population tripled between 2009 and 2022 from 121 to 355 confirmed individuals. This recovery happened because Nepal committed to it - and it is measurable, documented, and directly visible on any quality wildlife safari.
The diversity of Nepal's wildlife habitat is equally remarkable. The Terai lowlands (60m elevation) hold subtropical jungle with tiger, rhinoceros, sloth bear, wild elephant and gharial crocodile. Ascending through the mid-hills, forests of oak and rhododendron hold red panda, Himalayan black bear and hundreds of bird species. The high-altitude alpine zone above 4,000m provides habitat for snow leopard, Himalayan wolf and species found nowhere else. This vertical range - from tropical to alpine within 200km - means Nepal's wildlife is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Asia. The Chitwan and Bardia national parks in the Terai, the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve on the eastern border (outstanding for migratory waterbirds), and the Shivapuri, Phulchoki and Godavari birding sites in the Kathmandu Valley all feature in our wildlife and birdwatching programs.
We design wildlife tours across all levels: short 3-day Chitwan safaris, 7-day Bardia deep jungle programs, 10-day specialist bird tours, and multi-park circuits combining wildlife with cultural heritage at Lumbini and Kathmandu. Tell us your wildlife priorities, available days and interest level (casual wildlife visitor or specialist birdwatcher), and we build the right program. Browse the current packages below, and see our guides to tower night stay in Chitwan and our luxury vs budget wildlife tour comparison for detailed planning information.
In Chitwan: one-horned rhinoceros (sightings virtually guaranteed), Bengal tiger (possible on multi-day stays), sloth bear, wild elephant, gharial and mugger crocodile, spotted deer, sambar. In Bardia: Bengal tiger (higher sighting rate than Chitwan relative to visitors), rhinoceros, Gangetic river dolphin, tharu villages. Nepal-wide birdwatching: 850+ species across Terai, mid-hill and high-altitude zones. Our wildlife tour comparison guide has honest sighting probability information.
Chitwan National Park (UNESCO) is the most accessible - 4-5 hours from Kathmandu, excellent rhinoceros viewing, solid infrastructure. Bardia National Park in the far west is larger, less visited, has higher tiger-sighting probability relative to visitor numbers, and delivers a genuinely wilder experience. Budget and time-limited travelers typically choose Chitwan. Serious wildlife enthusiasts increasingly prefer Bardia. The 10-day circuit covers both.
Nepal has recorded 850+ bird species - approximately 8.9% of the world's total in a country the size of England. The extraordinary density results from Nepal's vertical range from 60m Terai lowlands to 8,849m Everest, creating multiple distinct habitat zones. Key birdwatching sites: Phulchoki (Kathmandu Valley), Chitwan's forest and grassland, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (eastern Terai, outstanding for migratory waterbirds) and the Annapurna high-altitude zone. See our 6-day and 10-day birdwatching packages above.
October to March is optimal for most wildlife viewing. Post-monsoon grass is shorter and wildlife concentrates near water sources. February to April is peak birdwatching season with resident and migratory species both present. The monsoon (June to September) makes wildlife harder to spot through dense vegetation, though parks remain open and rates are lower. A tower night stay in Chitwan is rewarding year-round.
Yes - the Chitwan tower night stay is one of the most distinctive wildlife experiences available and can be added to any Chitwan package. Overnight in a jungle observation tower inside the national park buffer zone, with a licensed guide and ranger present throughout. Wildlife active at night (rhinoceros near water sources, owls, deer) that daylight safaris miss entirely. Request the tower addition when inquiring about any Chitwan package.
