Mount Kailash Packing List: What to Carry for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Pack Light. Pack Right. Carry Nothing More Than the Sacred Mountain Requires.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is not a luxury trek. Accommodation ranges from comfortable hotels in Kathmandu to very basic guesthouses on the Tibetan Plateau to stone dormitories on the Kailash Kora. The terrain shifts from tropical Nepal hillsides to the world's highest plateau to a mountain pass at 5,630 metres in three days of walking. The temperature range across a single day at Darchen can be 25°C at noon and -10°C by midnight.

Packing for the Kailash Yatra means packing for this full range within a bag small enough that either you or a yak can carry it comfortably for three days on the Kora. This checklist covers everything you need - and specifically notes what you don't need to bring because it's available to buy or rent in Kathmandu.

Footwear

Trekking boots (critical): Waterproof, ankle-supporting, with a stiff sole capable of handling icy rock and moraine on Dolma La. Must be completely broken in before departure - 60-80km of hiking in these specific boots before you arrive in Kathmandu. At altitude, blisters that would be a minor inconvenience at sea level can become infected wounds that undermine the entire Kora. Do not bring new boots to the Kailash Yatra. For more information, see our 3-month fitness training plan.

Trekking poles: Available to rent in Kathmandu Thamel (USD 1-2/day). Invaluable for the Dolma La ascent and the steep descent on the Kora's second day. Not optional for senior pilgrims - purchase if renting is not reliable.

Gaiters: For snow conditions on Dolma La in May and June. Rent in Kathmandu. Read our comprehensive insurance and medical kit for full details.

Water, Food and Practical Items

Water purification: A Steripen UV purifier or purification tablets - the Kailash route guesthouse water sources are generally clean but always treat. Carrying 3-4 litres of purified water at all times above 4,500m.

Energy snacks: Buy in Kathmandu supermarkets. Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, dark chocolate for the Kora days and plateau transit. Above Saga, snack variety is limited and expensive. Our difficulty guide covers this in more depth.

Headlamp + spare batteries: Essential for the Kora - Dirapuk and Zutulpuk have limited or no electric lighting. Cold drains batteries rapidly.

Power bank (20,000mAh): Charging in Tibet guesthouses is unreliable. A fully charged power bank covers phone and camera for most of the Tibet section. See also: food and meals guide.

Duffel bag for yak (50-60 litre): The bag carried by your yak on the Kora should be a soft-sided duffel rather than a rigid pack. Rent in Kathmandu. Your daypack carries water, layers, snacks and essentials for the day.

Cash (USD and Nepali Rupees): Bring sufficient cash for the Tibet section. ATMs exist in Kathmandu; on the Tibetan Plateau and Kailash Kora area, there are none. Budget approximately USD 200-300 in cash beyond the package price for personal expenses on the Tibet section. For related guidance, visit our overland route.

What You Don't Need to Bring

Sleeping bag, trekking poles, down jacket, duffel bag, gaiters, lightweight trekking towels and most warm clothing items are all available to rent or buy at competitive prices in Kathmandu's Thamel district before departure. Do not bring specialist gear from home unless you own it already and it fits perfectly. The weight savings of renting in Kathmandu versus packing heavy items through international luggage restrictions are significant. Getaway Nepal Adventure provides a full gear rental recommendation list with trusted Thamel suppliers at the Kathmandu orientation meeting.
