There is a mountain in western Tibet that no climber has ever stood on top of. Not because it is technically impossible, but because the entire world's religious traditions - Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Bon - have reached the same rare agreement: this mountain is too sacred to be climbed. Mount Kailash at 6,638 metres is the axis of the universe in Hindu cosmology, the abode of Lord Shiva, the paradise of Demchok in Tibetan Buddhism, and the cosmic Mount Meru that anchors reality itself. It is unclimbed, unconquered, and - by the understanding of millions of devotees - unconquerable.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is the pilgrimage to this sacred mountain and to Lake Mansarovar (4,590m), the highest freshwater lake in the world, which lies at its foot. For Hindu devotees, bathing in Mansarovar and completing the Kailash Parikrama (the 52km circumambulation of the mountain) is the most significant act of religious merit available in a human lifetime. Nepal is the closest and most accessible gateway to this sacred landscape. Kathmandu is where the yatra begins.
This complete guide covers everything: the route from Nepal, cost, permits, itinerary options, the 2026 Horse Year significance, best time to go, difficulty, and how Getaway Nepal Adventure makes this once-in-a-lifetime journey possible. For more information, see our Kailash Kora complete guide.
Mount Kailash (6,638m) stands in the Ngari Prefecture of western Tibet, close to the borders of Nepal and India. It is simultaneously the holiest mountain in four of the world's major religions - a degree of cross-faith sacred significance unmatched by any other place on earth.
For Hindus: Kailash is the eternal abode of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. The mountain's distinctive four-faced form - one face for each cardinal direction - is understood as Shiva's own body. Completing one Parikrama around Kailash and bathing in Lake Mansarovar is believed to wash away the accumulated sins of a lifetime. Completing 108 Parikramas is said to bring moksha - liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
For Tibetan Buddhists: Kailash is known as Gang Rinpoche, "Precious Snow Mountain," and is understood as the earthly manifestation of Mount Meru - the cosmic axis at the center of all existence. The Kora (circumambulation) is a devotional act that purifies karma accumulated across many lifetimes.
For Jains: Kailash is Astapada, where Rishabhadeva - the first Tirthankara - achieved liberation. It is one of Jainism's most sacred sites.
For Bon: Tibet's pre-Buddhist tradition regards Kailash as the "Sky Goddess Soul Mountain" and circumambulates it counter-clockwise as an act of devotion to the ancient Bon protectors of the land.
Mount Kailash can be reached by several routes - from Lhasa via the Tibetan Plateau, from India via the Lipulekh or Nathu La passes, or from Nepal via the Kerung border. For most international pilgrims, the Nepal route from Kathmandu offers the strongest combination of accessibility, scenic beauty, cost efficiency and logistical reliability.
| Factor | Nepal Route (Kerung) | India Government Route | Lhasa Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Kathmandu | Delhi/state capitals | Lhasa |
| Route type | Overland or helicopter | Overland (lottery system) | Overland (longest) |
| Duration | 11-16 days | 22-26 days | 15-20 days |
| Booking system | Private agency (guaranteed) | Government lottery | Private agency |
| Altitude gain | Gradual via Kerung | Steep via Lipulekh | Gradual via plateau |
| Open to nationalities | All international | Indian nationals only | All international |
| Spiritual add-ons | Pashupatinath darshan in Kathmandu | Various state temples | Lhasa monasteries |
Crucially, the Nepal route begins at Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu - one of the most sacred Shiva temples in the world - creating a spiritually coherent arc from Nepal's holiest Shiva site to Shiva's cosmic abode at Kailash. For Shiva devotees, no other route offers this combination.
2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse in the Tibetan zodiac - an alignment that occurs only once every 12 years in the Horse Year cycle, and only once every 60 years in the Fire Horse combination. In Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu tradition, completing the Kailash Kora during a Horse Year multiplies spiritual merit by a factor of 12 to 13. In ordinary years, one Parikrama washes away one lifetime of sin. In the Horse Year, one Parikrama is considered equivalent to 12-13 Parikramas in ordinary years.
The Saga Dawa Festival 2026 falls on May 31, 2026 - and this year it coincides with both the full moon and the Year of the Horse simultaneously. This triple alignment of Horse Year, Saga Dawa and Purnima is an exceptionally rare event. Pilgrims completing the Kailash Kora on or around this date are believed to be accessing spiritual merit at a scale that may not recur in their lifetimes.
The practical result: 2026 is the most sought-after year for Kailash pilgrimage in recent memory. Permits and tour spots are filling faster than in any previous season. Early booking - ideally by January or February 2026 for summer departures - is essential.
Option 1: Overland Tour via Kerung Border (14-16 days)
The classic Nepal route. Drive from Kathmandu to the Kerung (Gyirong) border crossing, enter Tibet, and drive across the Tibetan Plateau to Lake Mansarovar and Darchen (the base for the Kailash Kora). This route provides gradual altitude gain across two days of plateau driving - a meaningful acclimatization advantage over faster options. Full cultural immersion of the Tibetan Plateau landscape. Best for pilgrims who want the complete traditional yatra experience. See the dedicated overland tour guide for the full route detail.
Option 2: Helicopter Tour via Simikot and Hilsa (11-13 days)
Flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then helicopter to Simikot and onward to Hilsa on the Nepal-Tibet border, entering Tibet at Burang (Taklakot). Reaches the Kailash area significantly faster than the overland route. Recommended for pilgrims with limited time, senior pilgrims and those who want to minimize long road travel. Full details in our helicopter tour guide.
Option 3: Full Moon Tour (Purnima Yatra)
Specifically timed to align the Mansarovar holy bath and Kailash Kora with the full moon (Purnima). Available via either overland or helicopter route. See the dedicated full moon tour guide.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra involves travel through the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, which requires a specific set of permits beyond a standard Nepal visa. The required documents are: Chinese Group Visa (processed as a group through a registered agency), Tibet Travel Permit (TTP), Alien's Travel Permit, Military Area Permit, and Foreign Affairs Permit. A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity is required. A fitness certificate from a certified doctor is mandatory. Getaway Nepal Adventure processes all Tibet permits and coordinates the group visa on behalf of all pilgrims in the group. Full permit details are in our permits guide.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is rated moderate to strenuous. The principal challenge is altitude: the tour spends multiple consecutive days above 4,500m, with the Dolma La Pass at 5,630m as the highest point. The Kailash Kora (52km over 3 days) involves 6-8 hours of walking per day on rocky, uneven terrain. No technical mountaineering skills are required. Yak and horse support is available for pilgrims who need it. See our full difficulty and fitness guide.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra operates from May through September. October to April sees the route closed due to snow and extreme cold on the Tibetan Plateau. May and June are the most spiritually significant window, coinciding with the Saga Dawa Festival. July and August are warmer with occasional rain but generally accessible. September offers excellent clear skies with cooler temperatures and fewer pilgrims. Full seasonal breakdown in our best time guide.
