The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage at any time of the year it can be undertaken. But among the thousands of pilgrims who have completed the Yatra across the decades, those who timed their Mansarovar bath and Kailash Kora to coincide with the full moon - Purnima - describe the experience in a specific way that other pilgrims cannot: the moonlight on Mansarovar's surface, the silver face of Kailash visible above the lake, the silence of an alpine lake at 4,590m under a full moon sky, and the collective prayer of hundreds of devotees bathing in water that tradition holds was created by Lord Shiva himself.
The Mount Kailash Full Moon Tour is Getaway Nepal Adventure's specifically timed pilgrimage departure designed around Purnima - the full moon night - at Lake Mansarovar and the Kailash Kora. It is not simply a regular tour that happens to overlap with the moon's phase. It is planned from the departure date backward to ensure the most sacred night falls at the most sacred site.
In Hindu tradition, the full moon (Purnima) is one of the most auspicious times for any religious activity. On Purnima, the relationship between the moon, the tides, the body's water content and the subtle energies that Hindu tradition calls Shakti are understood to be at their most receptive. A bath in any sacred water on Purnima carries more spiritual merit than the same bath on an ordinary day. A bath in Lake Mansarovar - already understood as the most sacred body of water in the world, created by Lord Brahma and maintained by Lord Shiva's grace - on Purnima is one of the most spiritually charged acts available to a devotee. For more information, see our Lake Mansarovar holy bath.
The full moon at Mansarovar also has a purely visual dimension that pilgrims who have experienced it describe as beyond words: the lake's surface at 4,590m altitude, with the atmosphere thinner and clearer than at any lowland location, reflects moonlight with an intensity that makes the water appear to be the source of the light rather than its reflection. Kailash's black southern face rises above the horizon behind the lake. The stars, at this altitude and in this remoteness, are visible in numbers that have no urban equivalent. These are not incidental details. They are part of what makes the full moon night at Mansarovar a transformative experience.

The most sacred Full Moon for 2026: May 31, 2026 coincides with Saga Dawa, the full moon AND the Year of the Horse - an exceptionally rare triple alignment. This date is simultaneously Guru Rinpoche's birthday (in Tibetan Buddhism), the commemoration of Buddha's enlightenment, and the most auspicious Purnima within a Horse Year cycle. Pilgrims completing the Kailash Kora and Mansarovar bath on or near this date are accessing a level of spiritual merit that occurs once every 60 years. Full Moon batch departures for May 31 will be allocated on a first-come basis - book as early as possible. Read our comprehensive best time to visit for full details.
The evening before Purnima, pilgrims arrive at Lake Mansarovar after the plateau drive from Saga or directly from Darchen. Accommodation at the Mansarovar guesthouses is basic but sufficient. As sunset falls, the lake changes color - from the deep turquoise-blue of the high afternoon to a darkening, increasingly reflective surface as the sky transitions. The surrounding mountains catch the last light before the moon rises.
At Purnima, the ritual begins after moonrise. Pilgrims descend to the lakeside, where priests (pandits accompanying the tour group) perform the puja: mantras, lamp lighting, flower offerings to the water, prayers to Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma whose waters these are by tradition. The holy bath follows - wading into Mansarovar's cold water (typically 10-15°C even in summer) and immersing the body while reciting Shiva mantras. Many pilgrims describe the cold water and the moonlight combined as one of the most physically vivid and emotionally intense experiences of their lives. Our Shravan month Kailash covers this in more depth.
After the bath, the group gathers for a hawan (sacred fire ritual) on the lakeside. Ghee, flowers and offerings go into the flame. The smoke rises toward Kailash. The mantras continue until the fire is complete. This is the spiritual heart of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra - and it belongs entirely to the night of the full moon.
The Full Moon Kailash Tour uses either the overland (Kerung) or helicopter (Simikot-Hilsa) route, with the departure date calculated to deliver pilgrims to Lake Mansarovar on the evening of the target Purnima. The tour structure is otherwise identical to the standard Kailash Mansarovar Yatra - 14-15 days overland or 12-13 days helicopter - with the Kailash Kora typically completed in the days immediately following the Mansarovar full moon bath.
Full Moon tour batches fill faster than any other departure type. The May 31, 2026 Saga Dawa Full Moon batch in particular is expected to be fully booked many months in advance. Contact Getaway Nepal Adventure immediately to check availability.

The full moon rises once a month. But the full moon over Mansarovar, in the shadow of Kailash, in the Year of the Horse, in the sacred month of Saga Dawa - that is a once-in-a-lifetime convergence. Har Har Mahadev.
