The overland route from Kathmandu to Mount Kailash via the Kerung (Gyirong) border crossing is, by a significant margin, the most popular Nepal-departing option for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. It is also, for those with the time and physical capacity for it, the richer experience of the two main route options. The Tibetan Plateau is not simply a landscape to cross on the way to Kailash. It is one of the most extraordinary environments on earth - vast, silent, at altitudes that make the sky look different, with a quality of light and space that shifts something fundamental in the way the mind processes the world.
By the time an overland pilgrim arrives at Lake Mansarovar, two days of plateau driving have already begun the internal journey. The contrast with the urgency of modern life is so complete, and so gradual, that the lake's sacred quality feels earned rather than arrived at.

Day 1-2: Kathmandu (1,400m) For more information, see our permits and documents.
Arrival in Kathmandu. Orientation meeting with Getaway Nepal Adventure guide. Pashupatinath Temple darshan - for Shiva devotees, the journey begins here, at one of the holiest Shiva temples in the world, receiving the Lord's blessing before heading to his cosmic abode. The following morning, Swayambhunath (Buddhist) and other Kathmandu Valley temples as time permits. Document checks, final permit collection.
Day 3: Kathmandu to Kerung (2,180m) Read our comprehensive best time to visit for full details.
Private vehicle departure from Kathmandu northward through the Trishuli valley and Rasuwa district. The road climbs through terraced hillsides, pine forest and increasing altitude. The Kerung (Gyirong) border crossing - immigration on the Nepal side, then Tibet side - is a transition point that pilgrims describe as one of the journey's most emotionally significant moments: the Himalayan range is visible behind, and Tibet's plateau edge ahead. First night in Kerung town.
Day 4: Kerung to Saga (4,640m) Our tour cost 2026 covers this in more depth.
The longest and most dramatically altitude-gaining driving day. The road climbs from Kerung's sub-alpine valley onto the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. By midday, the landscape has transformed completely: no trees, vast empty plains, sky of a depth of blue that has no equivalent at lower altitudes. Pilgrims feel the altitude begin as the vehicle climbs above 4,000m - a slight heaviness in the head, a slowing of thought, a deepening of breath. Saga (4,640m) is the first significant plateau town and the first night at genuinely high altitude. Acclimatization is important here: walk slowly, drink water, eat lightly.
Day 5: Saga to Lake Mansarovar (4,590m) See also: Tirthapuri hot springs.
The longest plateau drive of the journey, covering approximately 480km across the Ngari plateau. The landscape is stripped of everything non-essential: brown plains, distant snow peaks, occasional nomad camps with yaks, the immense Tibetan sky. Then, as the road crests a slight rise, Mansarovar appears: a blue so intense in the plateau light that it seems to belong to a different chromatic register from everything around it. The first view of the lake - and often, just visible on the horizon beyond it, the distinctive four-faced peak of Mount Kailash - is the moment most pilgrims identify as the journey's first great emotional peak.
Day 6: Lake Mansarovar - rituals, holy bath, meditation
A full day at Mansarovar. Morning puja by the lakeside. The holy bath - cold, sacred, unforgettable. Meditation on the northern shore with Kailash visible across the water. The Mansarovar parikrama (partial circumambulation of the lake) for those with energy. Evening hawan and prayers. See our dedicated Mansarovar guide for the full ritual context.
Day 7: Mansarovar to Darchen (4,560m)
Short drive to Darchen, the base village for the Kailash Kora. First full, close view of Kailash. Rest, acclimatization, preparation for the Kora. Optional walk to Asthapada for a closer view of Kailash's south face.
Days 8-10: Kailash Kora (3 days, 52km)
The spiritual and physical heart of the yatra. Full Kora detail in our Kailash Kora complete guide.
Days 11-14: Return overland to Kathmandu
The return journey reverses the outbound route - Darchen to Mansarovar for final prayers, then the plateau drive back to Saga, Kerung, and Kathmandu. The return is faster and the body lighter, having completed what it came to do.
The Tibetan Plateau road from Kerung to Darchen (approximately 950km) is a high-altitude sealed or partially sealed road - not a mountain track, but not a highway either. Road quality varies by section: the plateau sections are generally smooth and fast; mountain passes and river crossings can be rougher. Altitude and distance make each day's driving feel longer than the kilometres suggest. Minibuses seating 10-14 passengers are the standard transport.
Monsoon season (July-August) can cause road damage and occasional closures due to landslides, particularly on the Nepal side of the border. Getaway Nepal Adventure monitors conditions and has contingency protocols. The Kerung route is generally more reliable in July-August than older Nepal-Tibet crossing points.
Choose the overland route if: you have 14+ days available, you are reasonably fit and comfortable with long vehicle travel, you want the full immersive experience of the Tibetan Plateau, you are on a tighter budget, or you believe the journey itself (not just the destination) is part of the pilgrimage.
