Mount Kailash Motorcycle Tour from Nepal: The Ultimate Bikers' Pilgrimage

The Road to the Sacred Mountain - On Two Wheels

There is a version of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra that the pilgrimage brochures rarely show: a convoy of motorcycles crossing the Tibetan Plateau at 4,500m, dust rising from the road ahead, prayer flags strung from handlebars, the outline of Kailash appearing on the horizon after hours of riding through one of the most remote landscapes on earth. The Mount Kailash Motorcycle Tour from Nepal is this version - a pilgrimage and an adventure simultaneously, undertaken by riders for whom the road itself is part of the devotion.

Combining the spiritual power of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra with the freedom of motorcycle travel through some of Asia's most dramatic terrain, this tour has become one of the most distinctive and sought-after offerings in high-altitude adventure tourism. It is not for everyone. It is absolutely for some.

The Route: Kathmandu to Kailash by Motorcycle

The motorcycle route follows the same geographic corridor as the overland Kailash tour - Kathmandu to the Kerung border, across the Tibetan Plateau to Saga, Lake Mansarovar and Darchen - but experienced from a motorcycle's entirely different sensory register. Every gradient, every wind direction, every change in road surface is felt directly rather than observed through a minibus window. The Tibetan Plateau's scale - which is overwhelming from inside a vehicle - becomes physically immersive on a motorcycle. The cold at 4,500m is real cold, not air-conditioned isolation. For more information, see our overland Kerung route.

StageDistanceRoad Condition
Kathmandu to Kerung border~130kmPaved, winding mountain road. Some rough sections after monsoon.
Kerung to Saga~470kmMostly paved plateau road. Good surface for much of the route.
Saga to Lake Mansarovar~480kmSealed plateau highway. Flat and fast in places.
Mansarovar to Darchen~40kmShort, mixed surface road.
Total Kathmandu to Darchen~1,120kmMostly rideable by any adventure bike

What Happens at the Kailash Kora

The Kailash Kora (52km circumambulation) is walked on foot by all pilgrims - motorcycle or otherwise. Motorcycles do not traverse the Kora trail, which is a high-altitude trekking path unsuitable for vehicles. The bikes are parked at Darchen while the group walks the 3-day Kora to Dolma La (5,630m) and back. Luggage for the Kora can be carried by yak. This transition - from rider to walker, from machine to body, at the foot of the sacred mountain - is itself significant. The motorcycle brings you to Kailash. The walk is what Kailash asks of you in return.

Bikes: Own Bike vs Rental

Your own motorcycle (preferred): Riders who bring their own bikes to Nepal via customs (Carnet de Passage) and ride from Kathmandu generally have the most satisfying experience. The familiarity with your own machine, knowing exactly how it handles under load and at altitude, adds a dimension of confidence that rental bikes don't provide. Royal Enfield Himalayan, Hero Impulse, Kawasaki Versys 300 and similar middleweight adventure bikes are well-suited to the route. Large-displacement bikes (800cc+) are possible but heavier and less maneuverable on rough sections. Read our comprehensive permits for motorcycle for full details.

Rental in Kathmandu: Several Kathmandu operators rent suitable motorcycles for the Kailash route. Most commonly available: Royal Enfield 350cc and 500cc models, Hero Impulse 150cc. Rental rates: approximately USD 30-60 per day depending on model, with a security deposit. Insurance and breakdown assistance arrangements must be confirmed in detail - breakdown on the Tibetan Plateau is a logistical challenge that requires specific planning.

Permits for Motorcyclists

Motorcyclists require all the same permits as standard tour participants (Chinese Group Visa for applicable nationalities, Tibet Travel Permit, Alien's Travel Permit, Military Permit, Foreign Affairs Permit) plus specific vehicle permits for bringing a motorcycle into Tibet. The vehicle permit process requires the motorcycle's registration documents and is handled by Getaway Nepal Adventure's Tibetan partner agency alongside the standard permits. The additional lead time for vehicle permits means motorcycle tour participants should submit all documents at least 10 weeks before departure. Our Kailash Kora on foot covers this in more depth.
