Tibet holds two pilgrimage experiences that every Buddhist and every serious traveler places at the top of the sacred journey hierarchy: Mount Kailash and Lhasa. Kailash is the world's most sacred mountain; Lhasa is the world's most sacred city in Tibetan Buddhist tradition - home to the Jokhang Temple (the holiest in Tibetan Buddhism), the Potala Palace (the 17-storey monument that served as the Dalai Lamas' seat for centuries), and the great monasteries of Sera, Drepung and Ganden that formed the intellectual and spiritual core of Tibetan civilization for eight centuries.
The Mount Kailash and Lhasa Combined Tour from Nepal brings both together in a single 18-22 day journey that covers more spiritual ground than any other single Tibet itinerary available from Kathmandu.
Lhasa and Kailash serve different but complementary purposes within a Tibet pilgrimage. Lhasa provides: an introduction to Tibetan Buddhist culture, history and living monastic practice before arriving at the most sacred site. The great monasteries contextualize what the Kailash Kora means - who Milarepa was (whose cave is at Zutulpuk on the Kora route), what the Saga Dawa festival commemorates, why the clockwise direction is spiritually charged. Arriving at Kailash after Lhasa means arriving with understanding rather than just intention. For more information, see our Kailash via Lhasa route.
Conversely, Lhasa after Kailash provides: a space for integration, a context for what was experienced on the Kora, and an opportunity to visit the great Jokhang Temple's Jowo Rinpoche statue (the most revered Buddha image in Tibet) in the specific post-Kora state that many pilgrims describe as uniquely receptive.
Jokhang Temple: The holiest temple in Tibetan Buddhism, containing the Jowo Rinpoche statue (a 7th-century image of Shakyamuni Buddha said to have been brought from China by Princess Wencheng) that is the most revered object in Tibetan religious tradition. The Barkhor circumambulation circuit around the Jokhang is Lhasa's own daily kora - thousands of pilgrims walk it continuously throughout the day in a river of devotion that has been flowing, uninterrupted, for over 1,300 years. Read our comprehensive Kailash Kora guide for full details.
Potala Palace: The 17-storey whitewashed and golden-roofed palace that rises from Marpo Ri hill above Lhasa, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Former winter palace of the Dalai Lamas, containing over 200,000 statues, thousands of thangkas and the gilded tombs of eight Dalai Lamas.
Sera Monastery: One of the three great Gelugpa monasteries of Lhasa, founded in 1419. Famous for its daily monk debates - a traditional Tibetan Buddhist pedagogical practice where monks challenge each other's understanding of doctrine in energetic, theatrical debate sessions open to visitors in the afternoons. Our Lake Mansarovar holy bath covers this in more depth.
Drepung Monastery: Once the world's largest monastery, housing over 10,000 monks before 1959. Now smaller but still active, set in the hills west of Lhasa with extraordinary views over the Kyichu valley.
Yamdrok Lake: A sacred turquoise lake visible from the highway between Lhasa and Shigatse, one of Tibet's most beautiful natural formations and considered one of the sacred "life force lakes" of Tibet. See also: tour cost.
