Mount Kailash and Everest Base Camp: The Ultimate Nepal-Tibet Combined Tour

The Two Greatest Mountains. One Unforgettable Journey.

Nepal is home to Everest Base Camp (5,364m), the most famous trekking destination on earth. Nepal is also the gateway to Mount Kailash (6,638m), the most sacred mountain in the world. For travelers with the time, the fitness and the ambition to experience both, a combined Nepal-Tibet tour connects these two extraordinary destinations in one continuous journey.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the Everest Base Camp trek share a starting point (Kathmandu), a season (May-September for Kailash; October-November and March-May for EBC) and a spirit of reaching for something extraordinary. The combined tour takes this spirit to its logical conclusion: Nepal's mountains, Nepal's spiritual heritage, and Tibet's sacred landscape in a single 24-30 day itinerary that no traveler who completes it ever forgets.

Why These Two Belong Together

Everest Base Camp and Mount Kailash represent Nepal's two defining mountain experiences, but they are fundamentally different in character. EBC is a triumph of physical and logistical achievement - reaching the foot of the world's highest peak, at 5,364m, after 12 days of altitude trekking. Kailash is a pilgrimage of spiritual intention - the circumambulation of the world's most sacred mountain, at a peak altitude of 5,630m on Dolma La, in a journey defined by devotion rather than achievement. For more information, see our cost of combined tour.

Together they constitute a complete Nepal-Tibet mountain experience: adventure and spirit, achievement and surrender, the world's highest and the world's most sacred. Travelers who value both dimensions of Himalayan travel consistently identify the combined tour as one of the most meaningful journeys they have undertaken.

Suggested Combined Tour Itinerary (26 Days)

DaysFocusRoute
Days 1-2Kathmandu ArrivalOrientation, Pashupatinath darshan, Boudhanath, permit arrangements
Days 3-14Everest Base Camp TrekFly Lukla, trek to EBC (5,364m) and Kalapathar (5,545m), return Lukla, fly Kathmandu
Days 15-16Kathmandu recoveryRest, final Kailash document checks, acclimatization maintained
Days 17-30Kailash Mansarovar YatraDrive Kerung, Saga, Mansarovar (holy bath), Darchen, 3-day Kora, return Kathmandu

This sequencing places the EBC trek first - taking advantage of the autumn (October-November) trekking season for Everest, then pivoting to the Kailash overland in September (the end of the Kailash season), or doing both in spring (March-May) when both are accessible simultaneously. Read our comprehensive best time to visit Kailash for full details.

Optimal spring sequence: Kathmandu → EBC Trek (March-April) → Kathmandu rest → Kailash Yatra (May, timing for Saga Dawa Full Moon). This spring sequence is particularly powerful in 2026, with Saga Dawa Full Moon on May 31 and Horse Year energy throughout.

Acclimatization Advantage

One of the most practical advantages of doing EBC before Kailash is acclimatization carry-over. The EBC trek reaches 5,545m at Kalapathar and spends 12 days progressively building altitude tolerance. Arriving in Kathmandu after EBC, the body is already well-adapted to altitudes above 4,000m. The Kailash overland route's ascent to 4,640m at Saga and 4,590m at Mansarovar places significantly less physiological stress on a body that has just descended from 5,545m than on one arriving fresh from sea level. Our overland Kailash route covers this in more depth.

This means: lower risk of altitude sickness on the Kailash plateau section, more energy available for the Kailash Kora, and faster recovery on the Kora's most demanding day (Dolma La at 5,630m). The sequence is not just experientially logical - it is physiologically advantageous.
