Every year, thousands of prospective Kailash pilgrims send us questions. Some appear in every single inquiry. Some are asked by first-timers who don't know where to begin. Some are asked by experienced trekkers who want to know how Kailash differs from what they know. This comprehensive FAQ answers every commonly asked question about the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal, based on years of Getaway Nepal Adventure's experience planning and running this pilgrimage.
Q: What is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
A pilgrimage to Mount Kailash (6,638m) in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and Lake Mansarovar (4,590m) at its foot. The Yatra includes a 52km circumambulation of the mountain (Parikrama/Kora) over 3 days and a ritual holy bath in Lake Mansarovar. For more information, see our complete Yatra guide.
Q: How long does the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra take?
From Kathmandu: 14-16 days (overland via Kerung), 11-12 days (helicopter via Simikot). Including travel to/from Kathmandu, plan for 16-20 days total. Read our comprehensive permits full guide for full details.
Q: Is the Kailash Kora a trek or a walk?
A high-altitude trail walk requiring no technical climbing skills. The 52km circuit covers rocky, uneven terrain over 3 days, reaching 5,630m at Dolma La Pass. It is strenuous but achievable by fit, well-acclimatized pilgrims without mountaineering experience. Our difficulty and fitness covers this in more depth.
Q: When is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra season?
May through September only. October to April, the route is inaccessible due to snow and extreme cold on the Tibetan Plateau. See also: insurance and medical guide.
Q: Is it possible to see Lake Mansarovar from the Kailash Kora?
Yes. From the Dirapuk area (Day 1 of the Kora), Mansarovar is visible to the south on clear days. The best views of both Kailash and Mansarovar simultaneously are from the road between Darchen and Mansarovar, not from the Kora itself. For related guidance, visit our Kailash Kora guide.
Q: Is there an age limit for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
No official age limit exists for the private tour via Nepal. Successful completions by pilgrims in their late 70s are documented. What matters is current health, fitness level and appropriate itinerary pacing. Pilgrims over 65 benefit from the 16-day extended itinerary with additional acclimatization time. For more information, see our best time to visit.
Q: Can women do the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
Absolutely. Women complete the Kailash Yatra successfully every season. There are no restrictions on women's participation. Women-only group departures are available on request through Getaway Nepal Adventure.
Q: Do I need prior trekking experience?
No specific trekking experience is required. However, reasonable physical fitness and the ability to walk 6-8 hours on uneven terrain at altitude is essential. Two to three months of regular aerobic exercise and hill walking before departure is strongly recommended.
Q: Can pilgrims with health conditions do the Kailash Yatra?
It depends on the specific condition. Controlled hypertension, managed diabetes and many other chronic conditions are compatible with the Kailash Yatra with appropriate medical preparation and monitoring. Cardiac conditions require specific pre-departure assessment. Consult your doctor and contact Getaway Nepal Adventure to discuss your specific situation.
Q: Do I need a Chinese visa for the Kailash Yatra?
It depends on nationality. Indian and Nepali nationals do not require an individual Chinese visa - a Group Tibet Travel Permit (arranged by the operator) is sufficient. Nationals of UK, Australia, Canada, Malaysia and Singapore are also currently exempt. US nationals require a Chinese Group Visa. Check current status with Getaway Nepal Adventure as rules can change.
Q: Can I arrange the Tibet permits myself?
No. Tibet Travel Permits and related permits cannot be arranged independently by foreign travelers. They must be processed through a licensed Tibetan travel agency. This is why booking through a registered operator like Getaway Nepal Adventure is not optional - it is the only legal way to access Tibet.
Q: What documents do I need to provide to the operator?
Passport scan (minimum 6 months validity), passport photos (6 copies), fitness certificate from a certified doctor, travel insurance certificate, and a Chinese visa application form if applicable for your nationality.
Q: What is the total cost of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
Standard group joining overland from Kathmandu: approximately USD 2,800-3,500 for most nationalities. Private overland: USD 4,500-6,000. Helicopter: USD 4,500-6,000. See our detailed cost guide.
Q: Is it cheaper to book through an Indian operator or a Nepal operator?
Nepal-based operators typically offer lower pricing as they are the source provider. Indian operators resell Nepal-sourced tours with a margin. Booking directly through Getaway Nepal Adventure eliminates this markup.
Q: How early should I book for 2026?
For the 2026 Horse Year (especially Saga Dawa Full Moon on May 31), immediately. For other 2026 months, at least 3-4 months in advance. Tibet permits require 4-6 weeks processing minimum.
Q: Is the Kailash Yatra safe?
With proper preparation, appropriate insurance, a licensed operator and qualified guides, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a manageable high-altitude pilgrimage. The primary risks are altitude sickness and cold weather - both of which are mitigated by proper acclimatization protocols, appropriate gear and responsive guides. Serious incidents are rare on properly organized tours.
Q: What happens if I get altitude sickness on the Kora?
Your guide will assess your symptoms against the AMS protocol. Mild symptoms mean rest and observation. Moderate-severe symptoms mean immediate descent from the current altitude. In cases requiring evacuation, your travel insurance covers helicopter rescue. Getaway Nepal Adventure guides carry pulse oximeters and emergency oxygen for altitude emergencies.
Q: Is mobile signal available on the Kailash Yatra?
Mobile signal is available in Kathmandu and at major border/plateau towns (Kerung, Saga). Signal is absent or very limited at Mansarovar, Darchen and throughout the Kailash Kora. Plan your communication arrangements accordingly.
Tell us your preferred dates, group size and which tour style interests you (overland or helicopter). We respond within 24 hours with full itinerary and pricing.
