Milke Danda Trek: Remote Eastern Nepal's Hidden Rhododendron Ridge

The Milke Danda is a long, high forest ridge that runs north-south between the Arun and Tamur river valleys in far eastern Nepal. It is Nepal's national flower in abundance: one of the most extensive rhododendron forests in the country covers the ridge, blooming from crimson to pink to white across the entire landscape in spring. The panoramic views from the ridgeline take in Makalu (8,485m), Kanchenjunga (8,586m), and a broad sweep of eastern Himalayan peaks that almost nobody sees because almost nobody treks here.

The 15-day route follows the ridge through forests, past scattered Limbu and Rai villages, and along high moorland before descending into the Arun valley system. Teahouse infrastructure is minimal and improvised in places; this is genuinely remote trekking in one of the least-known corners of Nepal. The combination of spring rhododendron, complete isolation, and close-range views of two mountains above 8,000m creates an experience that cannot be replicated on any more popular route.

This is the right trek for trekkers who want eastern Nepal's landscapes without the crowds and logistics of the Kanchenjunga routes, and who value natural beauty and solitude above comfort. For nearby east Nepal routes, see our Makalu Base Camp Trek and Lumba Sumba Pass Trek.
