Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek: Around the Five Treasures of Great Snow

Kanchenjunga (8,586m), the world's third-highest mountain, sits in the far northeastern corner of Nepal, bordering Sikkim in India. Its local name means "Five Treasures of Great Snow," a reference to the five peaks above 8,000m that make up the massif. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area surrounding it, 2,035 km2 of protected terrain, was one of the earliest conservation areas established in Nepal specifically to protect high-altitude biodiversity alongside the indigenous cultures of the region.

The 27-day circuit completes a full loop around the mountain by crossing the Mirgin La Pass (4,500m) between the northern Ghunsa Khola valley and the southern Yalung valley. The northern approach passes through Rai and Limbu villages in subtropical forest before climbing to the Sherpa community at Ghunsa (3,427m) with its active Buddhist gompa, then continues to Kambachen and Lhonak en route to the North Base Camp panorama at Pang Pema. The pass crossing connects to the southern valley and Cheram, Ramche, and the Yalung Glacier with its close views of Kanchenjunga's southern face, before descending back to the trailhead. Along the way, Jannu (7,711m), one of the world's most dramatic mountain profiles, dominates the western skyline.

This trek requires prior high-altitude experience, good fitness, and comfort with basic facilities. As of March 2026, solo trekkers can obtain the Kanchenjunga RAP individually, though a licensed guide remains mandatory.
