Classic Upper Dolpo Trek: The Snow Leopard Country of Western Nepal

Upper Dolpo was the setting of Peter Matthiessen's 1978 masterpiece, The Snow Leopard, and the landscape he described remains essentially unchanged. This high-altitude trans-Himalayan region borders Tibet, sits largely above 4,000m, and receives fewer than 700 trekking visitors per year. The permit alone costs USD 500 for the first 10 days, making it one of the most deliberately restricted trekking destinations in Nepal. That restriction is the point: Upper Dolpo is protected precisely because it is the last of its kind.

The 27-day Classic Upper Dolpo Trek reaches Phoksundo Lake, Nepal's deepest lake at 3,611m, a turquoise expanse beneath vertical canyon walls that has appeared in both Matthiessen's writing and Eric Valli's film Himalaya. From the lake the route continues to Shey Gompa, the ancient "Crystal Mountain" monastery that sits at the spiritual heart of the region, and on to the remote high-plateau villages of Saldang and Yangtser, where Tibetan Buddhist culture has survived largely undiluted by the 21st century. Yak caravans crossing passes above 5,000m are routine sights. Teahouses are almost non-existent: this is a full camping expedition with cook, camp staff, and all logistics.

Upper Dolpo is for experienced trekkers who are prepared for weeks of remote camping, variable weather, altitude above 5,000m, and the kind of cultural immersion that most trekking routes can only gesture toward. For a shorter introduction to the Dolpo region, see our Phoksundo Lake Lodge Trek or Lower Dolpo Round Trek. Browse all routes on our remote Nepal trekking page.

Frequently Asked Questions - Classic Upper Dolpo Trek

How much does the Upper Dolpo permit cost?
Three permits totalling approximately USD 570 per person: Upper Dolpo RAP (USD 500 for 10 days, USD 50/extra day), two Lower Dolpo permits (USD 40 each), and Shey Phoksundo National Park permit (USD 30).

What is Upper Dolpo famous for?
Upper Dolpo is the setting of Peter Matthiessen's 1978 classic The Snow Leopard. Features include Phoksundo Lake (Nepal's deepest lake), ancient Shey Gompa monastery, Saldang village, and one of the last intact Tibetan Buddhist cultures accessible to trekkers.

Is this a camping trek?
Yes. Upper Dolpo is primarily a full camping expedition. The majority of the route has no teahouse infrastructure, requiring tents, a cook, camp staff, and full expedition logistics.

How many people trek Upper Dolpo per year?
Fewer than 700 visitors per year, compared to 30,000+ on the Everest Base Camp trail. The high permit cost and remote logistics are deliberate barriers designed to protect the region.
