Pilgrimage Tour in Kathmandu: 6 Days Through the Valley's Sacred Sites

The Kathmandu Valley holds more UNESCO World Heritage Sites per square kilometre than almost anywhere in the world, and a significant proportion of them are active pilgrimage sites rather than museum pieces. This 6-day tour moves between Hindu and Buddhist sacred sites in and around the valley: Pashupatinath Temple on the Bagmati River, where cremation ghats and Shiva worship have continued without interruption for over a thousand years; Budhanilkantha, where the largest stone-carved Vishnu in Nepal lies in a water tank at the base of Shivapuri Hills; Pharping, where Guru Padmasambhava is believed to have achieved enlightenment in a cave that remains an active retreat site; and Namobuddha, one of the most important Buddhist stupas in Nepal, approached by a forest hike from Dhulikhel.

The itinerary is structured to give each site proper time rather than rushing through all of them in a single day. Days 2 and 3 cover the Kathmandu city sites. Day 4 goes to Pharping Monastery, which sits above the valley rim and requires a half-day. Day 5 is the Dhulikhel drive and Namobuddha hike, continuing to Panauti, one of the oldest Newari towns in Nepal. Day 6 is departure. For a combined pilgrimage covering sites beyond Kathmandu, see our 11-day Hindu Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour or Muktinath Pilgrimage Tour.
