Lumbini Pilgrimage Tour: Birthplace of Buddha, Mayadevi Temple and Tilaurakot

Lumbini is one of the four holiest Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world, alongside Bodh Gaya (enlightenment), Sarnath (first sermon), and Kushinagar (death). It is the only one of the four located in Nepal. Siddhartha Gautama was born here around 563 BCE, and Emperor Ashoka made a pilgrimage to confirm the birthplace in 249 BCE, erecting the inscribed pillar that still stands today. The Mayadevi Temple, built over the exact birth spot identified by Ashoka's pillar, was excavated and restored by UNESCO and marks the beginning of every pilgrimage to Lumbini.

The 6-day tour moves through the complete Lumbini archaeological zone: the Mayadevi Temple and its sacred pond, the Ashoka Pillar, the international monastery zone where 27 countries have built national Buddhist temples, and Tilaurakot, 27km away, where the excavated ruins of the Shakya kingdom palace are the site where Siddhartha spent his first 29 years before renouncing palace life. Pilgrims seeking all four major Buddhist sites should note that Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar are across the border in India and can be reached by road from Lumbini within a day. For a combined Nepal Buddhist pilgrimage covering Kathmandu sites alongside Lumbini, see our Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour.
