Hindu Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour Nepal: 11 Days, Muktinath, Lumbini and Kathmandu

Nepal has a higher concentration of pilgrimage sites per square kilometre than almost any other country. This 11-day tour covers the main circuit: Kathmandu Valley heritage temples including Pashupatinath and Budhanilkantha; Manakamana Temple by cable car in Gorkha; Pokhara's main temples including Gupteshwor Mahadev cave; Muktinath at 3,749m in Mustang, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, where 108 cow-headed waterspouts pour sacred water and an eternal flame burns on water; and Lumbini, the UNESCO-listed birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, where the Mayadevi Temple marks the exact spot.

Muktinath is the physical and spiritual centrepiece. The combination of the Vishnu pagoda, the 108 waterspouts, the sacred flame (water, fire, and earth combined in one spot), and the altitude makes it unlike any other pilgrimage site in Nepal. Getting there requires a scenic 25-minute flight from Pokhara to Jomsom followed by a day's journey through the Kali Gandaki valley, the world's deepest gorge. Lumbini closes the circuit on the return, a complete contrast: flat Terai plains, the Mayadevi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar from 249 BCE, and the international monastery zone where Buddhist nations from across the world have built their national temples. For a standalone Muktinath trip, see our Muktinath Kaligandaki Tour. For Kathmandu-only pilgrimage, see our Kathmandu Pilgrimage Tour.
