Chitwan Tiger Trail brings you to the park where Nepal’s modern wildlife conservation story began. Established in 1973 as Nepal’s first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, Chitwan remains the most accessible and most rewarding wildlife destination in the country, holding around 120 tigers within 932 square kilometers of sal forest, riverine grassland and marshland roughly 4 to 6 hours from Kathmandu.
Chitwan’s real strength is consistency. While a tiger sighting is never guaranteed anywhere in the wild, even on a 3 day visit, the park delivers a one-horned rhino sighting on over 90 percent of safaris, a population that has grown from fewer than 100 nationally in 1968 to roughly 750 today, with around 694 of them in Chitwan alone. Add near-certain sightings of spotted deer, monkeys and both gharial and marsh mugger crocodiles on the river, and Chitwan Tiger Trail delivers the most reliably rich wildlife experience of any park in Nepal, with tiger as the genuine bonus rather than the only measure of a good trip.
This 5 day itinerary is based in Sauraha, Chitwan’s main gateway village, giving you easy access to the park’s eastern sector alongside its established network of lodges, restaurants and Tharu cultural shows. Activities combine jeep safari for ground coverage, a traditional dugout canoe ride along the Rapti River for crocodile and bird sightings at water level, and a guided jungle walk for a slower, more attentive pace through the forest.
Chitwan Tiger Trail is the right starting point for first-time wildlife travelers to Nepal, families, and anyone who wants maximum sighting probability across the widest range of species within a short, well-organized trip.
