Wings of Nepal is built for travelers whose primary interest is the country’s extraordinary bird diversity rather than its mammals. Nepal holds over 900 recorded bird species within a country smaller than England, roughly 9 percent of the world’s known birds, a density made possible by the country’s dramatic elevation range from 59m to nearly 8,849m within a single small territory. This 8 day tour covers four of the country’s strongest birding locations in sequence, each offering a genuinely different habitat and species mix.
The tour begins in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, Nepal’s smallest protected area and its single best birding destination, holding over 400 recorded species against the country’s total of roughly 900, including the rufous-vented prinia, found in Nepal only at this reserve. From there, the tour moves to Chitwan National Park, where riverine forest and grassland support a different mix of species alongside the park’s famous mammal population. The final stretch covers two sites close to Kathmandu: Phulchoki Hill, the highest point in the Kathmandu Valley rim and one of the richest forest birding sites in the country, and Shivapuri National Park, a protected watershed forest within sight of the capital that nonetheless holds genuinely serious bird diversity.
Across all four sites, expect a mix of resident forest species, wetland and water birds, and, depending on season, migratory species arriving via the Central Asian Flyway. Expert local birding guides accompany each leg, since identifying calls and movement in dense forest or reed habitat is a skill that meaningfully changes what you actually see and correctly identify over the course of the trip.
Wings of Nepal suits dedicated birders building a serious Nepal species list, bird photographers wanting varied habitat access in a single trip, and travelers who want their wildlife trip organized entirely around birdlife rather than treated as a side activity to a mammal-focused safari.
