Best Time to Trek to Everest Base Camp: Season-by-Season Guide

Timing Makes or Breaks the Everest Trek

The Everest Base Camp trek can be attempted year-round, but the quality of experience varies enormously by season. The difference between a clear October morning on Kalapathar with Everest's summit visible above the clouds and a July attempt through monsoon rain with limited visibility is not a minor variation - it is essentially a different trip.

This guide covers every season honestly: the best months for clear views and stable weather, when crowds thin and costs drop, when it's technically possible but not recommended, and the one season that is genuinely best avoided.

Autumn: September to November (Best Overall)

September: The tail end of monsoon clears through September, with the first true clear days appearing in mid-to-late September. Trails are green and lush from the monsoon rains. Crowds are building but not yet at peak. An excellent shoulder window for those flexible with exact dates.

October: Peak season - and peak for a reason. October combines the most stable weather of the year, the clearest mountain views (often crystal-clear from Kalapathar), comfortable daytime temperatures at lower elevations (15-20°C in Namche), and the vibrant atmosphere of hundreds of trekkers all on the same route. The Tengboche Monastery Mani Rimdu festival falls in November and is one of the Khumbu's most beautiful cultural events.

November: Quieter than October, colder nights (below -10°C above 4,500m), but often excellent visibility. The crowds thin noticeably in the second half of November. Daytime temperatures in Namche: 8-12°C. Gorak Shep nights: -15°C or below.

Spring: March to May (Second Best)

March: A strong shoulder window - warmer than November, significantly fewer trekkers than April-May, and rhododendrons beginning to bloom at lower elevations. Winds can be stronger than autumn through early March.

April-May: Spring peak season, driven partly by the Everest climbing season (April-May is the primary summit window, when Base Camp is a tent city of climbing expeditions and the Khumbu Icefall is constantly active). This adds a genuinely unique dimension to the EBC experience in spring - the route feels more purposeful, the Base Camp itself is dramatically busier. Weather is warmer throughout (daytime Namche: 18-22°C) with rhododendron forest spectacular in April.

Note on Lukla flights in spring: Peak demand in April and May regularly shifts flights to Manthali (Ramechhap) airport, a 4-5 hour pre-dawn drive from Kathmandu. Book early and build this into your plan.

Winter: December to February (Cold but Clear)

The EBC trek in winter is an authentic experience for experienced cold-weather trekkers: very few other people on the trail, extraordinarily clear mountain visibility on most days, and the dramatic isolation of the Khumbu in deep winter. The trade-offs are significant: temperatures at Gorak Shep regularly reach -25°C at night, some high teahouses close, trail conditions above Dingboche can be icy, and the cold at altitude adds substantially to the physical challenge. Sleeping bag rated to -25°C and experience sleeping in cold environments are both necessary. Not recommended for first-time high-altitude trekkers.

Monsoon: June to September (Not Recommended)

The Khumbu receives less monsoon precipitation than Nepal's southern and central regions, and some trekkers do complete the EBC trek in monsoon months. The realistic downsides: daily afternoon rain, leeches on trails below treeline, frequent clouds reducing mountain views significantly (including Everest on most days), muddy and slippery trail sections, and higher risk of Lukla flight delays due to cloud cover. For trekkers with inflexible schedules and specific monsoon months, it is possible - just considerably less rewarding than autumn or spring.
