14 Day Ghost of Manang Snow Leopard Trek

Ghost of Manang takes you into one of the highest snow leopard density areas anywhere in the Himalaya. Manang valley, sitting in the rain shadow of the Annapurna massif within the Annapurna Conservation Area, holds an estimated 5 to 7 snow leopards per 100 square kilometers, among the highest documented densities in Nepal. This is not a casual wildlife stop bolted onto a trekking itinerary. It is a dedicated 14 day tracking expedition built around genuine field methodology, working alongside local trackers with years of direct experience reading this specific landscape.

The snow leopard, known locally as Hiun Chituwa, is one of the most elusive large predators on Earth, and sightings are never guaranteed anywhere they are tracked. What this trek offers instead is a structured, patient, multi-day search across the valley’s prime habitat, including the trails toward Khangsar, Gunsang, Yak Kharka and Ledar, reading the same signs experienced trackers use: fresh scat, scratch marks on rock faces, scent marking, and the alarm calls of blue sheep, the snow leopard’s primary prey in this region.

Manang itself sits at 3,540m, with the trek’s tracking days ranging up toward 4,200m at Ledar and beyond, demanding genuine high altitude fitness and proper acclimatization built into the schedule. Beyond the snow leopard itself, the valley supports Himalayan wolf, blue sheep, Himalayan musk deer, golden jackal, and a remarkable diversity of high altitude birds including the Himalayan griffon and bearded vulture, set against an unbroken backdrop of Annapurna II, Gangapurna and the wider Annapurna range.

This trek suits serious wildlife travelers and photographers with realistic expectations about the patience genuine tracking requires, and the physical conditioning needed to operate safely above 4,000m for an extended period.
