This 11-day itinerary moves through three landscapes that have almost nothing in common with each other, which is the point. The Kathmandu Valley — ancient cities, Buddhist monasteries, medieval woodcarving, altitude at 1,345m. Chitwan — flat subtropical forest at 150m, rhinoceros on the jeep track at 6am, crocodiles on the riverbank. Pokhara — lakeside city at 820m with the Annapurna range sitting on the horizon so close you feel you could walk to it.
Day 1 goes straight to Nagarkot rather than staying in the city, which is the right sequence. The ridge-top sunrise over the Himalayas is the orientation point for everything that follows. Days 2-4 cover the Kathmandu Valley properly: Bhaktapur with a full morning, Boudhanath in the early hours, Kopan Monastery on the hilltop north of Boudha for the best elevated view of the valley, and the standard heritage circuit with a licensed specialist guide. Days 5-7 are Chitwan, with rhino encounters, river safaris, and the rhythm of a wildlife schedule rather than a tour bus schedule. Days 8-10 are Pokhara, with a morning mountain flight and time on Phewa Lake. Day 11 is the return and departure.
Accommodation throughout is selected for location and quality rather than brand. For a longer circuit that adds Bardia National Park and western Nepal, see our 12-day Grand Nepal Tour in Style.
