Namobuddha is one of the three most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal, alongside Boudhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath Temple in Kathmandu. Located at 1,750m elevation on Gandha Malla Hill, 40km southeast of Kathmandu in Kavrepalanchok district, the site holds a significance in Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism that extends far beyond Nepal's borders. Pilgrims from Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim, and Buddhist communities across South and East Asia travel to Namobuddha specifically. The stupa, the monastery, the forested hilltop setting, and the carved stone depiction of the founding legend make Namobuddha one of the most atmospheric sacred sites in the Himalayan region - and one of the most rewarding half-day escapes from Kathmandu for travelers of any background.
The legend that makes Namobuddha sacred: Prince Mahasattva, believed in Tibetan Buddhist tradition to be a previous-life incarnation of Shakyamuni Buddha, was walking in the jungle near this hill with his two brothers when they came upon a tigress close to death from starvation, unable to feed her cubs. His brothers moved on. Prince Mahasattva, in an act of supreme compassion, offered his own body to the tigress so she and her cubs would survive. The stupa (dome-shaped Buddhist monument) was built on the site where his bones were found. A carved stone slab at the site depicts the act of offering in clear detail. This story - the Vyaghri Jataka - is central to the Bodhisattva path teaching in Mahayana Buddhism, making Namobuddha not just a pilgrimage site but a living teaching.
The Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery crowns the hilltop with colorful prayer flags, elaborate Tibetan murals, assembly halls and monks' quarters. The monastery is one of the most important Thrangu Rinpoche institutions in the world and operates as an active teaching and practice center. Visitors are welcome at all hours during opening times. Morning and evening puja (ritual prayers) ceremonies are accessible to guests and provide an authentic immersion in monastic Buddhist practice. The monastery also accepts overnight guests - staying here is one of the most peaceful and spiritually distinctive accommodation experiences within a day's reach of Kathmandu. See our monastery stay packages for booking details.
Beyond the pilgrimage site itself, Namobuddha sits at the center of several excellent walking trails through the surrounding Kavre hills. The most popular approach for visitors from Kathmandu is the hiking route from Dhulikhel (3-4 hours, 14km) through terraced farmland and forest with continuous Himalayan views. The trail from Balthali Village (2-3 hours) is a shorter alternative. Onward routes to Panauti and Phulchowki Hill create multi-day walking circuits in the Kavre district. For context on nearby sacred sites, see our Nepal pilgrimage sites guide.
Namobuddha Stupa: The main stupa, built on the bones of Prince Mahasattva, stands on the slopes of Gandha Malla Hill. The stupa is surrounded by smaller shrines, prayer wheels and the carved stone slab depicting the Mahasattva legend. The entire hilltop precinct is draped in prayer flags and filled with the sound of monks chanting from the monastery above. Circumambulating the stupa with pilgrims in the early morning or at dusk is the most atmospheric way to experience the site.
Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery: The hilltop monastery is the spiritual center of the Namobuddha complex. The main assembly hall (dukhang) contains large Buddha images, thousands of butter lamps and elaborate Tibetan murals. The monastery library and retreat centers house monks and nuns from Nepal, Tibet and western countries. Visitors can observe morning puja (around 6am) and afternoon ceremonies. Photography inside the temple should be done respectfully and with permission. The monastery rooftop terrace has exceptional views over the Kavre Valley and, on clear days, toward the Himalayan range.
Mahakala Temple: A small but significant shrine to Mahakala (a fierce protective Buddhist deity) on the monastery grounds. The dark interior and the ritual offerings make this a powerful complement to the main stupa.
Hiking Trails: Four main hiking routes connect Namobuddha to surrounding destinations. The Dhulikhel to Namobuddha trail (3-4 hours, 14km) is the most popular and passes through Kavre villages and forests with mountain views throughout. Balthali to Namobuddha (2-3 hours) is a shorter approach through beautiful countryside. Namobuddha to Panauti (2-3 hours) continues to the ancient Newari town at the confluence of three sacred rivers - a natural cultural continuation of the pilgrimage. Namobuddha to Phulchowki (3-4 hours) ascends to one of the Kathmandu Valley's highest hills (2,782m) with panoramic views.

Prince Mahasattva (believed to be a past-life of Shakyamuni Buddha) encountered a starving tigress with cubs in the forest near this hill. In supreme compassion, he offered his own body to feed her. The Namobuddha Stupa was built on the site of his sacrifice. A carved stone slab at the site still depicts the act. This Vyaghri Jataka story is one of the most important Bodhisattva teachings in Mahayana Buddhism.
