Rolwaling Valley Trek: Nepal's Hidden Valley and the Tashi Lapcha Pass

The Rolwaling Valley sits immediately west of the Khumbu region, hard against the Tibetan border beneath Mount Gaurishankar (7,134m). Local Sherpas call it the valley that means "the grave," a name earned by its setting deep between towering ice giants, and it remains one of the least-visited trekking regions anywhere in Nepal. Local folklore holds that the Yeti makes its home in this remote valley; several research expeditions have searched for evidence over the decades without success, adding to the mystique of a region that still receives only a handful of trekking groups each year.

This 24-day expedition is a serious undertaking. The trek begins with a drive east of Kathmandu and several days of camping through Tamang and Chhetri villages and dense, untouched forest before reaching Beding and Na, the last permanent Sherpa settlements in the valley. From there the route continues to Tsho Rolpa, one of Nepal's largest glacial lakes, before the trek's defining challenge: crossing the technical Tashi Lapcha Pass (5,755m) over glacier terrain to descend into the Khumbu region via Thame Gompa, Namche Bazaar, and Lukla.

Few treks in Nepal combine this level of genuine remoteness with such a dramatic high-altitude finish. Rolwaling rewards experienced trekkers with diverse flora and fauna, traditional Sherpa culture rarely seen by outsiders, and a glacier crossing that few trekking companies still offer. For trekkers seeking the established Everest trail instead, see our Everest Base Camp Trek or browse our full Everest region trekking page.

Frequently Asked Questions - Rolwaling Valley Trek

What is the Rolwaling Valley Trek?
A remote, 24-day camping expedition through one of Nepal's least-visited valleys to Tsho Rolpa Lake, crossing the technical Tashi Lapcha Pass (5,755m) into the Khumbu region and finishing via Namche Bazaar and Lukla.

How difficult is the Rolwaling Valley Trek?
This is one of the most demanding treks in Nepal, requiring previous high-altitude trekking experience, strong fitness, and comfort with glacier travel. The early stages require full camping support as teahouses are not available in the lower Rolwaling Valley.

What permits are required?
Rolwaling is a restricted area requiring a special permit, in addition to the Gaurishankar Conservation Area permit, Sagarmatha National Park permit, and a climbing permit for Tashi Lapcha Pass. We arrange all required permits as part of your package.

Is this trek suitable for first-time Himalayan trekkers?
No. This is a technical, high-altitude expedition recommended only for trekkers with prior glacier or high-pass experience. First-time trekkers are better suited to our standard Everest Base Camp Trek.
